Heart Camp is an annual four-day overnight camping experience sponsored by Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh designed specifically for children who have some form of heart disease. This program, which began in 1991, was created to provide the campers with a traditional, but medically supervised, camping experience available at beautiful Camp Kon-O-Kwee in Zelienople, Pennsylvania. Staffed by volunteering doctors and nurses from Children’s and by counselors with a personal history of heart disease, Heart Camp helps these younger campers deal with the issues and concerns that only they can understand. Activities include campfires, hayrides, hiking, fishing, canoeing, and swimming, as well as an “Ask the Counselors” program, in which campers can ask older heart patients about their problems and how they have dealt with them.
According to Camp founder, Dr. William Neches, “Heart Camp gives young heart patients the chance to just be kids, and the opportunity to get away with other children who know what it’s like to have a heart problem. The campers go home with increased self-esteem and new friends with whom they share a common bond.” To learn more, CLICK HERE to visit their website.
