"A Salute to Nurses: Many Roles, One Profession"
by: Karen Hartman, President, Corazon Consulting

The success of Corazon’s business of cardiovascular consulting depends on the experience and expertise of our consultants, many of whom are nurses. The majority of our team of ‘heart experts’ is comprised of RNs, BSNs, and MSNs that started their careers at the bedside in cardiovascular care. They have “been there” in the clinical setting, and can advise clients with a solid background of knowledge about what it takes to provide excellent clinical care in the full continuum of CV services. Our nurses set themselves apart by their desire to not only excel in their profession, but to grow outside of traditional roles…

The ‘many roles, one profession’ ideal is truly embodied in the nurses at Corazon. Supplementing a clinical foundation with solid business training indeed contributes to advancing the nursing profession, in that this unique combination of skills gives testament to the growth potential that exists for the nurses outside of the typical care delivery setting. To supplement their clinical training, several nurses at Corazon have gone on to receive MBAs or other advanced degrees. This unique pairing of clinical and business expertise opens doors for our staff to take on full knowledge of the ‘business of healthcare,’ understand both important perspectives, and advance in the field.

Taking a wealth of knowledge of nursing standards, procedures, and requirements to another level – helping other nurse leaders fine-tune their expertise – is a huge part of what our consultants do. They can discuss a new care delivery model with ease, and also speak to how implementing the model will affect the bottom line. This skill transfer represents a cross-over from leading a patient care unit to leading a feasibility study or other planning project for the benefit of a program. It’s a different way to help patients and affect the lives of those in a community. The nurses at Corazon are certainly deserving of recognition for advancing the profession and taking traditional nursing skills to new heights.
